Tubectomy Operation

Tubectomy Operation

What Is Tubectomy Operation? Tubectomy literally means cutting of tube. Tubes in general terms mean Fallopian Tubes. There are two Fallopian Tubes in our body, located in the lower part of the abdomen. The Fallopian tubes are responsible for transmitting ova from ovaries to uterus. The length of each tube is about 10cm. One end is attached to the uterus and other end open in the abdomen. The ova is released from the ovary and is picked up by Fallopian tube. It is then transmitted to the uterus. If sperms are present in the Fallopian tubes, the ova is fertilised and embedded in the uterus. In Tubectomy operation the tubes are divided and cut, so that ova is transmitted to the uterus. Hence pregnancy cannot take place.

Why The Precautions Are Essential Before Undergoing Tubectomy Operation?

Sperms of semen are alive for 72 hours. Suppose a woman had sex about 2 days before the operation. Then these sperms would be available in the Fallopian tubes and may fertilise. If the fertilised ova is implanted inside the uterus then pregnancy may happen even after tubectomy Another cause of presence of viable sperms in the Fallopian tubes is the sperms may remain in the distal end of the Fallopian tubes and fertilise an ova, even after Tubectomy. But the fertilised ova cannot enter the uterus so it will implant in the Fallopian Tube resulting in ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy may result in rupture can cause severe haemorrhage and death.

What To Do?
  • 1. Tubectomy should be within a week after menstruation.
  • 2. Don't have sex at least 4 days before tubectomy.
  • 3. If have sexual intercourse, use a condom.
  • 4. If ejaculation takes place, inside the vagina, wash the vagina from inside even if using a condom.
Beware
  • 1. If condom gets torn, postpone the tubectomy for next month.
  • 2. Don't have sex for at least 3 days after tubectomy.
  • 3. Try a position where you rest on your abdomen. In this condition deep penetration inside vagina is not possible. And the male partner can control the ejaculation in a better manner.

What If Menstruation Do Not Take Place In Time?
Immediately go for pregnancy check up. Chances of spontaneous recanalisation exists even if tubectomy has been done correctly.

Can Tubectomy Operation Be Undone?
Yes. Ligated and divided tubes can be successfully opened. Their lumen is restored through microsurgery. Success rate is almost 90%. Howeverone should always opt for microsurgery rather than simple operation.

Which Doctor Should Be Chosen?
Plastic surgeons are experts in microsurgery. They are usually competent doctors to open the Fallopian tubes by microsurgery. Very few gynaecologists have training and experience of microsurgery. Avoid them for opening the Faloopian Tubes.
